UK News Editor and now Editor – Play.tm
I have been writing for Play.tm since December 2009. This role involves managing extensive online news content on a nightly basis, as well as contributing to news, reviews, previews and providing editorial. I also now manage all the content and deal with commissioning freelance work.
Contributing Editor – GamesAreEvil Network
Since July 2009 I have been a contributing editor at GamesAreEvil.com and ThePortableGamer.com: the fastest growing games network around. This role consists of supervising news content over both sites, development of the news writers, as well as writing news posts and contributing reviews, previews and features. Additionally, I produced the weekly half-hour podcast, entitled ‘DoubleJump’, which I wrote, recorded and edited.
I have taken opportunities to promote the sites through presence at industry events (Edinburgh Interactive, MIGS and the LGC), where I have worked to build good relationships with PR departments and agencies representing all levels of the games industry.
Since going freelance, I have written extensively for the following websites:
Since November 2008 I have been a sales assistant at Game. I bring my thorough knowledge of games to this role, allowing me to help customers make informed choices on which game/console/accessories are right for them. This role also helps me to stay informed of what the consumer’s needs and priorities are, which I find invaluable when writing about games.
This role has also helped me to develop my skills in communicating with a variety of people, from customers to company representatives, as well as further developing my team-working skills.
Mainstream news experience
I also have experience of working in the mainstream press, which I found to be invaluable experience where I developed transferable skills in news writing, editing and working to tight deadlines. This includes work experience in press agency reporting, where I had bylines published in the Sun, Daily Record, Daily Mail, Daily Star and the Glasgow Herald, all within a 60 day period. This role helped me develop my news-gathering and reporting skills in a professional environment.
I also completed six months of work experience in 2007 as a sub-editor at Scottish and Universal Newspapers, which involved subbing articles accurately and creating headlines and captions to fit in the pages of the Stirling Shopper, Stirling Observer and Perthshire Advertiser. This was very useful in terms of my learning how to apply the skills learned in college in a professional environment.
During this time I supplemented my experience by doing freelance copywriting for a company named McCann Erickson, where I specialised in writing about entertainment and leisure.
