Buck 65, King Tut’s Wah-Wah Hut, Glasgow, 24/3/08

I don’t generally write about music. It’s an overpopulated market and I don’t always feel like I know enough to do the music justice.

Tonight, however, is a different story. Buck 65 is a very unique man. He is a good Canadian hip-hop artist for one which in itself is a mighty feat given that Canada is not known for its vibrant hip-hop community. His music is exceedingly eclectic and belies his love of Johnny Cash. There is absolutely no-one quite like him in the world.

To see him live is one hell of an experience. Buck 65 is a one-man-show and although he is quite diminuitive he manages to fill the stage amply. His music really comes alive and in between songs it’s almost like he’s having a conversation with a bunch of mates rather than playing to a packed club venue.

His poetry and articulation is flawless and the live versions of his songs are all genuine one-off performances. It is indeed a privilege to have been able to catch this man in action and if you get the chance to see him at a theatre near you I strongly suggest you take it. You won’t be disappointed and you might just come out with a new perspective on life.
